Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2 Daytona, race number 39.
This car was raced by Ignazio Giunti and Nanni Galli in the 1968 edition of the Le Mans 24 hours race. It won the Prototype 2000cc class. The 'Daytona' body on the Tipo 33/2 was first used on 3rd February 1968 at the 24 hours race of Daytona. This body was the successor of the 'Mugello' body. The Daytona body had two versions; a long tail and a short tail. The panels in the roof were removable so the car could run as a spider or a coupe. The Daytona's were much more reliable than the earlier Mugello and Fléron versions. The engines produced 310 hp but the drivers were urged not to exceed 8300 rpm's. At Daytona the cars finished 5th, 6th and 7th. At Daytona the young Mario Andretti raced for Alfa Romeo for the first time. The engines were updated for the Targa Florio on 5th May 1968. The car now had a 2.5 liter V8. The short versions were used in this race and finished 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th. The 33/2 in the lead crashed just 14 km before the finish line. At het 1000 km race at the Nürburgring the cars finished 5th, 7th and 10th; A short tail Daytona won the race at Mugello and the 500 km at Imola the cars finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd. At Le Mans the long tail versions were used and finished 4th, 5th and 6th overall.
