1994: The Revenge of the Racing Taxis

After the successful 1993 DTM season where Nicola Larini won the championship, AMG Mercedes introduced a brand new successor for the 190E, the C-Class. Opel also entered a complete team for the 1994 season, with three Opel Calibra's V6, piloted by Formula One veteran Keke Rosberg and Manuel Reuter. Fierce battles would be fought on the tracks during this DTM championship, resulting in Klaus Ludwig taking the title for AMG Mercedes.

BMW decided to participate in the championship for another year, eventhough in 1993 they were only racing against themselves.

Alfa Romeo updated the 155 V6 ti for the new season too. The new engine weighed 7 kg. less, an active suspension system was fitted, together with ABS and improved aerodynamics to keep the cars competitive. Larini, Nannini, Francia and Danner got the new 1994 specs car. The Alfa privateers used the 1993 cars.

The DTM calendar took the teams to 12 tracks in Germany, Belgium, Italy and the UK. On every racing day, two races had to be run. The races in Italy (Mugello) and the UK (Donington Park) where not part of the DTM championship, so no point could be scored there. The Alfa Romeo155 V6 ti competed against the AMG Mercedes C-Klasse, the Opel Calibra V6, the Ford Mustang GT, the BMW E36 and a 1993 Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evo2.

DTM Racing calendar 1994

Alfa Corse and team Schübel Engineering and Engstler Motorsport were the teams driving the Alfa Romeo 155 V6 ti. Gianni Giudici also got his hands on a V6 ti, after a disappointing 1993 season with the Alfa 155 TS.

Alessandro Nannini had a strong start of the season; Eventhough Nicola Larini qualified first in 1.49,79 min. and drove the fastest lap in the race in 1.38,05 min., Larini's car had to retire from the first race with engine problems, allowing Nannini to win the first race of the season. For the second race, Larini borrowed Buttiero's car but a broken exhaust meant just 8th place in race 2.

24th April 1994,  Hockenheim Germany.

AMG Mercedes turned out to be tough competition for Alfa Romeo. Tiim took pole position andscored his first victory with the brand new C-Class taxi in race one. Nannini won the second race for Alfa Corse.

8th May 1994,  Nürburgring Germany.

Klaus Ludwig in his AMG Mercedes managed to win the first race, but heavy rain during the second race meant the Alfa's with their four wheel drive were superior.

22th May 1994,  Mugello Italy.

The races at Mugello were not part of the DTM championship, so no point could be scored. AMG Mercedes won both races.

2nd June 1994,  Nürburgring Germany.

Alessandro Nannini won the first race after Ludwig and Schneider hit each other at the start.  In race 2 Giudici knocked race leader Bernd Schneider of the track and Keke Rosberg too, preventing Rosberg from taking the first victory for Opel. Klaus Ludwig in his AMG Mercedes won the second race.

Race 2: 34 laps, total race distance 102,986 km.

26th June 1994,  Norisring Germany.

Nicola Larini drove the fastest race lap in 52,20 sec. and won race 1. Privateer Kris Nissen won the second race just in front of Larini.

Race 2: 43 laps, total race distance 98,900 km.

17th July 1994,  Donington Park UK.

The races at Donington Park were not part of the DTM championship, so no point could be scored. Nannini won the first race, Reuter won race 2 in his Opel Calibra.

24th July 1994,  Diepholz Germany.

AMG Mercedes dominated the Diepholz races. Both races were won by an AMG Mercedes C-Klasse, the first race by Klaus Ludwig and the second by Bernd Schneider.

21st August 1994,  Nürburgring Germany.

During the start, Roland Asch conveniently hit Nannini and Larini, putting them far back and leaving no opposition to the AMG Mercedes team.

4th September 1994,  AVUS Berlin Germany.

Stefano Modena replaced the disappointing Buttiero for the Alfa Corse team and won race 1 and 2. John Winter (real name = Louis Krages) touched Kris Nissen's Alfa and crashed hard in race 1.

18th September 1994,  Alemannenring Germany.

The Alfa's were dominant in both races, taking positions 1 to 5 in race 1 and postions 1 to 3 in race 2.  Alessandro Nannini's title aspirations were blown to pieces however in race 2 by taxi driver Roland Asch who hit Nannini deliberately. After making a pitstop and falling back a furious Nannini slammed Asch off of the track, causing his Alfa to catch fire.

With no chances of winning the title, the Alfa Romeo's had a bad day at Hockenheim, giving AMG Mercedes an easy victory in both races.
